Shopify has a host of built-in solutions that can be deployed in order to mitigate the risk of chargebacks and fraud. The first of these that we leveraged is Shopify Flow. Shopify Flow is an app, free to install and use, created by Shopify and available in the Shopify App Store. It allows Shopify merchants to create flows based on conditional logic in a no-code manner. A merchant or, as in this case, a merchant’s web developer can build a flow starting with a “trigger”. The “trigger” is the event that starts the flow in motion, for example, when an order is placed. Once the “trigger” event happens, a series of “actions” based on conditional logic occur, checking if each condition is true or false and taking subsequent actions based upon the preceding action. In this way, we can automate a number of tasks that, if left to be done manually, would be time-consuming and inefficient. We used Shopify Flow to create fraud mitigation protocols, but it can be used in a myriad of additional use cases, such as fulfillment, order processing, managing inventory, loyalty programs, and more. The first Shopify Flow we created was to automatically capture payment for orders deemed to have a LOW risk of fraud based on Shopify’s internal fraud risk algorithm. Any order that is flagged as MEDIUM or HIGH risk must be processed manually. An email notification is sent to our client’s internal team member responsible for fulfillment, who can then gather more information before deciding whether or not to proceed with the payment capture and order processing.
When the app evaluation was complete, we had uninstalled and removed fifteen apps from Louisville Vegan Jerky’s Shopify store. We ultimately chose to recommend and utilize Klaviyo for email and SMS marketing, which is the most widely used app in this category used by Shopify merchants, with over 320,000 Shopify businesses having it installed as of this writing. Additionally, we removed each of the three data analytics and reporting apps and one of the Quickbooks apps. The long-term plan is to leverage Shopify Tax and Shopify’s Manual Tax to replace Quickbooks altogether.
In order to meet Google’s new sender requirements, we added a branded sending domain, updated the default sender email address, and set up DMARC authentication for their branded sending domain.
